Standards Globalized

Here is a sample of two 9-12 Common Core English/Language Arts Standards annotated for global learning:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.1
Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
*As a class, we  could study current world events and analyze perspectives. As an assessment, they can pick a controversial global issue and argue a side in a developed essay using rhetoric and evidence to advance their claim.
*Students could prepare speeches for a United Nations style Socratic Seminar or debate using what was learned about a specific nation's culture and customs to fuel their perspectives on the topics at hand.
*This standard pairs well with the global competencies of recognizing perspectives and communicating ideas.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.9-10.7
Analyze various accounts of a subject told in different mediums (e.g., a person's life story in both print and multimedia), determining which details are emphasized in each account.
*Analyze media coverage and narrative prose and poetry that captures a cultural perspective and identify the source and purpose in the differences of the details. Students can later discuss the impact of bias and propaganda on the global perception of a nation.
*Students can use various mediums to create ad campaigns to advocate for nations and organizations in need of support for global matters.
*This standard suits all four global competencies, but especially investigating the world and taking action.

Any standard can be globalized! Let's collaborate!

Taking Action Globally - small steps
Taking Action includes small action items, enormous action items, and everything in between.  Remember that small steps are also an important part of effectively incorporating Taking Action into the classroom and school community.
Resources:
  1. The Lazy Person’s Guide to Saving the World This site provides a how-to guide for environmental protection that ranges from level 1 (do from your couch) to level 4 (do at work/school). Students could conduct surveys and other studies to find opportunities for environmental improvement in their communities and/or schools. Globalize the lesson in class by showing students the Global Sustainability Goals and showing how a trickle effect can impact nations then watch them take action!
  2. Children’s Primers Court the Littlest Radicals This is an article dedicated to children's books that promote diversity and advocate for underrepresented groups. These selections would make a great literary addition to your supplemental texts, giving students a chance to explore the world and recognize perspectives right at their desks. "A" is for Activist!
  3. 7 Ways You Can Change the World
  4. Global Goals Jam  Help your students join the international think tank that is focused on interventions to support the global sustainability goals. The next generation likely has the ingenuity to solve our world problems. Follow the link to request a kit and learn about an international learning collaboration opportunity.
  5. The GLOBE Program (science)
Taking Action for the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s)

The Global Goals for sustainable development are “17 goals to transform our world”. In creating the list of goals, the U.N. is inspiring people - especially students - around the world to take action to solve the world’s most urgent problems.
Resources:
  1. Video: We the People (3 minutes)
  2. World Smarts STEM Challenge
  3. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development:  Child-friendly
  4. SDG’s (in Spanish)
  5. The World’s Largest Lesson Resource guide for lesson plans that connect with each of the global sustainability goals and categorized based on age/grade. These topic links cover the most relevant issues that we face as a global community at this time. Pair these plans up with your focus standards.
  6. Unicef Kid Power
  7. Unicef: The World We Want
  8. U.N. videos for many of the SDG’s issues
  9. Teens Dream Video Competition Here is an opportunity for students to participate in an annual video contest based on what they have learned concerning one of the global sustainability goals. They can show their mastery of the content while taking action.
Local & Global Taking Action Communities
Your students can connect classroom learning & personal passions to existing global communities of action-oriented global citizens.
Resources:
  1. United Way of Greater GSO United Way is a national outreach organization, but this link will lead to volunteer opportunities and programs serving the Greensboro, NC area. This organization serves the needs of Guilford County Schools students, so finding ways to lead students into taking action through United Way could very well be enabling them to make a difference in their peer's lives or their own communities.
  2. Out of the Garden Project This organization serves poverty stricken people in the triad area, which is ranked 9th in the nation for food insecurity. Students could hold school-wide food drives or assist with distribution. This would pair well with a science course as they learn about agriculture as sustainability.
  3. Habitat for Humanity There are lots of local opportunities to support the building of affordable/attainable housing for those in need. Students can learn about the circumstances and demographics of local homelessness and partner with this organization to find age-appropriate ways to take action. For those local the the Triad in North Carolina, Contact Chris Tippens for general volunteer inquiries. Volunteer Weather Hotline: 336-232-0155
  4. HandyCapable This is a local organization that offers the teaching technology skills to individuals with special needs. This is a great nonprofit for STEM classes to connect with, so that they may take their skills to the aid of a worthy group.
  5. The Volunteer Center of GSO This organization hosts an annual service learning leaders summer camp for teens, pairing them with local non-profits that serve the community in various capacities. Students can be matched based on their passions to make the educational experience more meaningful. How will you encourage students to spend their summer?
  6. The World Children’s Prize
  7. Global Youth Service Day
  8. World Water Day
